The filter element is made from medical grade, type 304 stainless steel micronic filter cloth providing unmatched protection against oil contamination and resultant engine damage. A rare earth magnet is installed in the top of the element for magnetic pre-filtering of the oil. The unique twist lock design allows for easy disassembly, inspection and cleaning. The quad-ring gasket doubles the seal between the filter and the engine . The filter housing is carved out of a solid piece of 6061 T6 billet aluminum with cooling fins, which not only looks good but aids in dissipating heat. |
Easy to install, oil pressure comes up quicker, and oil temp is at least 10-dF cooler than the traditional oil filter. Havent changed oil yet but looking forward to cleaning to see what all it captures in the oil.

This is a really quality built product. I have space issues with my Tempest/Champion oil filters on my O470-50 Continental engine and mount. The Challenger filter is smaller diameter and a little shorter. Fits nicely between engine mount tubing. I also like very much thr “lifetime” filter screen that is very easy to remove and clean. Overall Im very impressed with the quality of this product!

I should also add to my other comment that the CP48109C oil filter is the same dimensions as the CP48108C filter. I found that the CP48109C is more likely to be available so if you need and CP48108C filter assembly just get a CP48109C and it will be exactly the same. The 48109 filter in the steel case filters is aprox an inch longer that the 48108 but that is not the case in the Challenger filter line.
After reading all of the propaganda on this filter I decided to give it a try. It is installed on a O-200 powered Varieze. The workmanship on the filter assembly is impressive. I must admit that I am pleased with it so far. I have only an hour on the engine with the Challenger oil filter installed but so far it has lived up to the claims on the Challenger website. Ive seen about a 10 deg decrease in oil temp over the legacy oil filters. I also noticed about a 5 PSI increase in oil pressure at idle which I attribute to the manufactures claim of an increase in flow rate over the paper oil filter elements. The installation is pretty straightforward, and the filter footprint is considerably smaller. The only thing I havent tried yet is cleaning it at the 50 hr interval. That looks like it could be a bit messy and time consuming. Of course, cutting a filter open to inspect the paper element is a bit messy and time consuming. I plan to buy a second filter element so I can have a clean element on hand so that cleaning the element can be accomplished at my leisure vs. delaying the oil change while cleaning the element. So far, I think its been a good investment.
