Challenger Air Filter Application Guide (Please review as reference only)

Challenger Aviation Products premium high flow air filters are FAA/PMA certified for Robinson Raven 44 II helicopter.

Their aircraft air filters are designed using proprietary K&N Engineering high performance filter media to increase clean air flow which means more horsepower. Challenger has over 15,000 cleanable reusable air filters for most general aviation aircraft and helicopters. Pilots have reported up to one inch in manifold pressure, more speed and including fuel savings from one half to one gallon of gas.

Installed in a Cessna 182. Have noticed less fuel burn per hour and a bit more horsepower.

Love the concept of a reusable filter, but in our A36 Bonanza it did not hold up. The flocking bonded to the metal screen goes away over time, rendering the filter unusable. We do have worse than normal weather conditions here in Southeast Alaska, perhaps in a more gentle environment one might have better success.

The air filter instructions and STC state it must be maintained in accordance with the Challenger instructions for Continued Airworthiness document 4003 Revision E In the instructions there is a small note that the filter gasket must be replaced every 12 months or 100 hours. The replacement Challenger gasket is more expensive than a Brackett element. The gasket is also hard to install because the instructions state you should install the new gasket after the filter is oiled. They also brag that the filter has no ADs. The gasket is missing a retainer lip which has allowed the gasket to suck into the carburetor. The gasket retaining lip is the subject of three ADs for Brackett filters and required on those installations. Read AD96-09-06. Why was the Challenger filter STC approved with a known defective design that WILL fail after ADs were issued for the same subject to a different manufacturer? The Challenger ICA instructions are in place but the labor to clean and install the filter plus replacing the gasket each time makes it more expensive to maintain than a Brackett or Paper assembly. Plus the Challenger filter assembly has to be mandatory replaced every 25 cleaning cycles. This filter design without a gasket retaining lip should be subject to an AD specific to the Challenger filters and redesign. The STC should be revoked immediately until the redesign occurs. I have removed the Challenger filters from every airplane I maintain because there WILL be an accident.
