This is the second Trutach I have purchased this year. The first one was erratic to say the least and it finally quit working at all. I have had two other ones in different airplanes, and they worked flawlessly. So far, this one is working flawlessly as well.

I had previously been using a digital tach that was only accurate within +-50rpm and was sensitive to different lighting and alignment issues.
Trutach II rests on my glare-shield with reliable consistency and accuracy within one rpm regardless of lighting angle.
Exceptionally pleased.

Great little stand alone device. Seems to work well and the company takes pride in their product. The tachometer was packaged well in the box with a manual that was in English and not translated from another language. The unit is powered by a 9v battery that was included! Nothing else to buy, just put the battery in and go fly.

Ordered the TruTach as a back up to my 71yr old mechanical Tach in my Stinson. Super easy to use and took all of a minute to set up. After comparing the two at idle my mechanical read 1000rpm and the TruTach read 1100! At cruise there was a 75 RPM difference as well. The unit sits on my panel right in my line of sight and has no problems reading from that far back. Love the unit. Highly recommend.

Mounted it on the top of my Piper 140s dash with a piece of velcro. Works great, far more accurate than the old mechanical tach and gives me a sort of heads up display. Only two negatives (not really a fault of the unit). When the setting sun is from behind, the reflection off the windshield can cause it to read double the RPM. When the ambient light drops below a certain threshold (just after sunset) it can no longer read the RPM.

Could not be easier. Literally, set it on the glareshield and it begins its readout almost immediately. Confirmed our two different RPM readouts in the aircraft and now we know which one is more accurate. If you want a simple, effective means of validating prop RPM this is it.

This product works exactly as advertised. Very pleased.
I tried a $30 optical tachometer from the internet. Total failure. Got this, checked calibration with a fluorescent bulb as instructed by mfg. It varied +/- 2 rpm (precision better than 0.001%). Got in the airplane and pointed it at the propeller. In 1-2 seconds, I got the propeller RPM.
Also, very simple to change to correct number of prop blades.

Awesome little unit. Easy to use, easy to read. Confirmed my suspicions that my tach was reading high, which is unusual. Had my prop balanced after purchasing the unit and while balancing the prop, the mechanics unit showed I was turning at 2180 when my tach showed 2300. This little unit read the same as the mechanics prop balancer.

I didnt know what I was missing until buying this electronic tach. I have been flying our A36 Bonanza at 2320 RPM when the Beechcraft guage said 2400 RPM! This is a great addition to any propeller driven aircraft. Its accuracy is easily verified by simply pointing it to any florescent light!

August 15, 2019
Excellent product. I keep it on the glare shield as a backup. Of course I still have the factory tach and use it primarily, and the analog tach is easier for run up tests etc. but this is a great way to always know your rpm exactly. You can see the governor operate and whether it’s wandering. It does get hot In the sun though. Battery lasts a looong time. Even though I have it on for every flight. Don’t forget it’s optical. At dusk it gets funny until it quits altogether. Also can give some interesting readings sitting behind another plane waiting for the runway.

Worked really well. Simple instructions straight out of the box. Easily picks up prop from inside even in overcast conditions. Turned out my tacho was way out and with my new rotax engine I could have been overreving, so this little gadget may have saved a lot of wear or worse.
I will be using it as part of my 100 hourly from now on.

Great little item! Loaded it up on the dash with Velcro and gave immediate readings of what I suspected was being erroneously provided by my mounted tach. 150 low! Now I have better idea of the true RPMs being generated and can better manage engine operation. Wish it worked more consistently after the sun starts to drop and the light fades, but at least I know now how my mounted tach should be interpreted.

I wanted to check the accuracy of my electronic tach and it worked perfect.
I too thought it was broken or something was not right when I powered this up in my garage with fluorescent lighting. It actually picks up the pulses of the lights at 60 cycles. Times 60 seconds . I had a reading of 3600 . Pretty cool.
I now have used it with both model and homebuilt aircraft. Easy operation and I love that it uses 9v batteries as opposed to the very expensive CR series battery.

September 8, 2017
Easy to use and sensitive. It has an on-off switch and a switch to select the number of blades on the propeller, 2 to 5.
Calibration of the instrument can be checked using a fluorescent light. Florescent lights flicker at the frequency of the AC current 7,200 times per minute (for 60 Hz). When set to two blade propeller, the instrument should show 3,600 RPM when pointed to a fluorescent light.

July 20, 2017
Works great! The glare can sometimes throw it off, but minor adjustments to the angles will make it accurate again. I use this on the dash of my Mooney. I picked it up because I was nervous when my mechanical tach showed 100+ rpm over redline on takeoff. However, when using the Tru Tach and comparing them I found that I was reading ~100 RPM high on the mechanical tach and actually staying 25-30 rpm below the redline of 2700 rpm, according to the Tru Tach.

February 23, 2017
My performance did not meet the book values (I know, it rarely does). Bought another brand of tachometer and the readout would come and go. Returned it and purchased this one, set it to three blades, set it on the glare shield and it works perfect every time. Found my RPM was off by about 160 RPM. Great to set the power knowing the true value (still about 4 knots under the book value but close).

It worked first time out of the box, no problems. It did what I needed which was to confirm that I was not getting the expected 2700 rpms with the prop lever full forward. The case and switches made it feel more like a $100 instrument rather than a $200 instrument.

Pros: No complicated, confusing, intrusive, wiring, installation, or set up. Eliminates wasted time and money on trail and error bullshit like with many others Ive tried and returned due to erratic and inaccurate readings. Very fast, and simple installation with accurate readings. Pop in the supplied 9 volt battery, Turn it on with one of two switches, set number of blades with the other, set it on the dash facing the propeller(I used a small piece of Velcro to hold in place).
Cons: Will stop reading at dusk or even dark clouds. Must have daylight. Some type of small laser light source for picking up the prop at night and a back light would be perfect and 5 stars.

This device works well. 4 star due to poor quality construction. Just touching the screen will cause the liquid crystal to bleed . A little more industrial robustness would make the price appropriate.

Worked as advertised, quite surprising how quickly and easily it picks up the prop. I think it could have been made to have a higher quality look and/or feel.

February 6, 2018
A nice little tach that works quite well even when pointing at a angle. The reason for four stars is lack of TruTach support. I dropped mine and cracked the display causing it to black out. After multiple calls to the manufacturer no one ever answered the phone. I gave up and just bought another one.

Works well in bright lighting if cloudy or IMC, may read LO, indicating it doesnt have appropriate light to create a reading.
Lightweight and compact easy to use may need to weight or secure down depending on where you set it - it can move around a bit.
Overall it does what it needs to well at a good price.
