Overview

Welcome to the first edition of Pilot Weather: From Solo to the Airlines. It includes 394 pages, over 400 diagrams and pictures, plus a 550-entry glossary. This book consists of 33 chapters on the A to Z of aviation weather. Not only does it dwell on the theory of meteorology, but includes numerous chapters explaining the details of how to critically decipher many important aviation weather reports and forecasts.

Pilot Weather caters to all pilots... from your first solo to flying for the airlines. Whether you are looking to have a career in aviation or just to poke holes in the sky as a private pilot, this book will not only help you pass those exams, but, more importantly, teach you how to minimize your exposure to adverse weather. The book is printed in full color and many "tidbits of helpful weather goodies you won't find presented in any other aviation book or flight training programs," the authors promise.

Features

  • Captain Doug is an airline pilot first and a meteorologist second. Scott is a full-time instrument flight instructor and former NWS research meteorologist.
  • Both Scott and Doug teach weather to pilots, write aviation articles and as a team offer the best combination to learn the topic of aviation weather. They wrote the most in-depth weather book for aviators. It consists of 33 chapters including chapters on volcanic ash, space weather, weather north of the border and airborne weather radar.
  • Try to find another weather book offering such aviation weather diversity. Even though this book is geared to the pilot flying in the United States, aviators from other countries would benefit in having a copy handy.
  • Pilot Weather: From Solo to the Airlines is close to 400 pages of A to Z weather for pilots. Whether you are an aspiring pilot thinking about taking flying lessons or a seasoned airline professional, this book is for you!

Reviews

Dr. D and Capt D have created a masterpiece here. The first person little anecdotes in the book are priceless and provide background you wont find in any other text. Noticed a review that took off a star because it didnt have a section on the Skew-T. I think thats because the Skew-T deserves its own book. Well, Dr. D has written a new softcover and ebook called The Skew-T log (p) and Me: A Primer for Pilots that is 300 pages long and has over 200 diagrams/charts/images. Amazing content to compliment the Pilot Weather book Dr. D co-authored.

Got this book for a Christmas present and have been loving every minute of it. Dr. Scott and Capt Doug do a wonderful job presenting complex weather information in an easy to understand format. Their insight as experienced pilots and instructors just takes this book to the next level. Fully recommend this to any new pilots or even those with lots of experience. Also a great text for college students taking an aviation weather class.

If you want a text with some very practical knowledge, the book Scott and Doug wrote is worth every penny. Youll find important tidbits of knowledge in this book that you just cant find in any other book. It is truly the gold standard that all flight schools should be using today to teach weather.

An excellent addition to my meteorology library. I recommend it to glider and aeroplane pilots alike as a valuable reference tool.

Interesting book that has a wealth of info that will probably take me months or years to digest. Looks a bit pricey compared to other weather books but it does have lots of information presented in a pretty clear manner. Took off one star because it doesn’t have a detailed section on skew T log P charts.
