These are super landing/taxi lights. On the Hercules light being for experimental category aircraft only: I think not. The Hercules lamp, without the bracket, is a virtual drop in for the standard 4509 or 4509Q landing lights. FAR Part 43 allows owner/operators to replace bulbs as long as they are of the same rating. The Hercules is rated at 14 volts 100 watts, virtually the same as a 4509. There is no requirement to get an approval if you install a replacement bulb from a different manufacturer. Part 43 does indeed allow you to replace bulbs of any kind at will, so long as you use something that doesn't draw any more power or require any major modification to the frame. Unless you are rewiring the landing light circuit to use the various optional functions that the Hercules allows: hi-low, wig-wag, you only need to make a simple log book entry, no 337 form, no A&P sign-off required under Part 43. If you want the other options, an A&P can sign it out, again without a 337.

This unit is voltage regulated from 9 to 36 VDC however comparing a 24/28 volt supply to a 12/14 volt supply, a 15% output loss (watts and Lumens) at 12/14 compared to 24/28 volt operation. At 75F degrees (24C) ambient temp., output is reduced to about 80% output after about 5 minutes of operation,with all 30 LEDs lit. After 5 minutes of use at those same ambient temps, about 50 watts using only 18 landing LEDs. Also about 75 watts with all 30 LEDs lit after that same 5 minutes. Peak Lux at 26VDC 12% less (13VDC 20%) than Aero LEDs 36-4596 100 watt unit at 26VDC using all 30 LEDs 40% less (13 VDC 50%) Lux than The Aero LED using the 18 landing LEDs. This unit does not loose output due to temperature nearly as quickly as the Aero LED unit does. It also offers more options (flexibility) built in wigwag features, and 3 illumination modes, Landing (18 LEDs, taxi (12 LEDs) and both (all 30 LEDs), lower 1/2 output settings for all 3 modes. It also offers wigwag. All in all, we will use this for wigwag dual recognition lighting and taxi operations. We will keep using HID systems for landing since there are still no LED units that can come close to the performance of HID for a true (far reaching beam) landing light especially the 50Watt and higher HID wattages. HID does not loose brightness at all as it warms up. I would not recommend this LED or the Aero LED units for any cowling locations, NO LED unit will perform well there. They get too warm (ambient air temps) to have much output in those locations unless they are directly ducted with cooler outside air. We were hoping that LED would be a good total solution but its not there yet even now in 2018.

Q: Is the Aveo Hercules 30 approved to install on a normal category aircraft? Does it have FAA Approval?

No, this product is not FAA Approved for use in certified aircraft. Only the Aveo Galactica series lights hold FAA Approval. A keyword search of Aveo Galactica will bring up all current certified models by Aveo.

Q: Can these bulbs be drop in replacement for PAR 36 housings?

The Aveo Maxx Hercules LED landing light Part #11-10639 is the version without the bracket. This is a Drop in replacement for Par 36 housings.

Q: What is the current draw per wire, for a 12volt aircraft. What type of wiring is recommended and does it need to be shielded for RF?

Current draw: Taxi -> max. 2.2A (12V ), Landing -> max. 3.5A (12V ), Landing + Taxi -> max. 5.6A (12V ). Aveo doesn't have a recommended wire for use. While a shielded wire is not needed it is recommended.

Q: Is the Aveo MAXX Hercules LED landing / taxi / wig wag light priced and sold as a pair or individually?

These are priced and sold individually, one light.

Q: So am I to understand that one light fixture will provide landing light function as well as taxi light?

Yes that is correct.

Q: Do I need to install in a housing?

No this is a standard par 36, Aveo makes a brackett if you need it. It should fit in your original housing if your previous light was PAR 36.

Q: What would be the ground angle of the LED lighting be in taxi?

40 degrees by 20 degrees.
