Overview

Frequencies Covered
118-137 MHz

Designed specifically for mounting to the underside of an aircraft providing excellent radiation coverage for air-to-ground VHF communications. Bent configuration makes it ideally suited for helicopters and low wing aircraft.

The CI 122 has been re-tested and upgraded to the new RTCA DO-160D environmental requirements and offers 118 to 137 MHz frequency associated with the DO-186A MOPS.

Note: Comant Antennas no longer come with a gasket or template. Must order PN 09-05579 separately.

Applications
Single engine piston aircraft for applications of this antenna design. Consult your FBO or installation shop for best applicationinformation.

From my previous product review, the previous set up I had with the top mounted VHF, it was too close to the sensitive ACK-406 (updated and enhanced ELT). The RMI radio magnetic interference from the transmissions of VHF so close into the ELT antenna caused the red power light of the remote on the ACK to come on. Ostensibly this is why we were gettting so much static in our headsets when transmitting. No static for RX of VHF. Also I learned that if you have GPS nav as in a Garmin navigator, an interpheference test needs to be done. Top mounted VHF with top mounted GPS antenna created a fail situation for me. The bottom mounted Ci-122 solved all my issues. Could not be more pleased.

Was advised by our local avionics shop owner, based on my issue to remove my top fuslage mounted VHF antenna and get the Comant Ci-122 bottom mount. What I was having an issue with was scratchiness in our headsets upon transmission airborne only. In general ATC said the quality was so so but readable. Other symptoms included the red power light on our remote panel for our ACK-406 ELT coming on when we transmitted. GPS interference test failed also, that is a simple test, transmitting on certain frequencies then seeing if the bar graph drops off of the GPS signal strength on the settings page of your GPS unit. When I put the Ci-122 on the bottom and removed the top VHF all issues solved. Improved VHF TX and less to no feedback in headsets. No red light on ACK remote and GPS interference gone.

Q: What is the height of the Comant CI 122 antenna?

The total height is 18.5 inches long, as the CI-122 is a bottom mount antenna it is bent.

Q: How far does the Comant CI-122 hang down below the mounting surface?

Per the manufacture it is 8.75" from the base of the antenna to the bend.

Q: Does this antenna come with coax cable and connectors?

No, this is the price for the antenna only. Connectors and BNC connectors are sold separate.

Q: What screws are used to mount the antenna? Do they have to be any special material or just standard AN hardware with the appropriate screw head to fit into the countersink body of the antenna.

For part number 11-17922 the length of the screw depends on the mounting location. The mounting holes are .173 diameter and countersunk AN hardware is recommended.

Q: Does the CI-122 or the CI-121 require a metal aircraft frame to act as a ground plane or can these 2 antennae models be used on a non conducting surface like fiberglass? Does the type of aircraft material change the VSWR from the specifications?

The CI-122 (11-17922) does require a ground plane if mounted on a fiberglass airplane. The height of the antenna is the required diameter of the ground plane. Aircraft material does not change the VSWR of the antenna.

Q: What type coax is used with the CI 122 antenna?

On certified installations, we recommend using either RG400 or RG142.

Q: How many mounting screws for this antenna?

This has a footprint for four (4) holes.

Q: Do you sell the gasket for this antenna? In the description the gasket part number is listed as 09-05579. When this number is searched, it shows a fuel tank sealant.

Correct, Comant recommends forming a seal using part # 09-04612 which is a Chemseal sealant.
